Majority of the women would at least get one ovarian cyst at some point in their life. Moreover, not all is aware. Some women who happen to have ovarian cysts do not experience any symptom at all.

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs found in the ovaries of a woman. There are two ovaries found in the female reproductive system. Each ovary produces eggs during the childbearing period of a woman.

Like what I said earlier, not all women experience symptoms of ovarian cysts. Some of the symptoms are even harmless. However, some symptoms could also cause severe health risks. This happens when the ovarian cysts have ruptured.

There are different kinds of ovarian cysts. Some are considered common and non-cancerous while some are to be looked after.

Two Types of Functional Cysts

1. Follicle Cyst

During a woman’s normal menstrual cycle, an ovary produces an egg which later develops in a sac called follicle. Once the egg has matured, the follicle then breaks to release the egg. If the follicle fails to break, it will keep on growing as it turns itself into a cyst. Follicle cysts usually don’t have any symptom and are most likely to disappear within one to three months.

2. Corpus Luteum Cyst

After the follicle sacs have released the egg, it then shrinks into cells which are then called corpus luteum. Corpus luteum forms into a cyst if the follicle sac failed to shrink. This kind of cyst usually disappears over time but there could be instances that it could bring pain and bleeding.

The benign cysts or the less common ones are the following:

  1. Dermoids are usually cells that have been present since birth. These are sacs that are said to contain hair, fats, and other tissues.
  2. Cystadenomas are growths that develop outside the ovaries. They are said to contain watery fluids.
  3. Endometriomas are tissues that developed outside the uterus.

Some women may also develop Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS caused by small cysts formed in the ovaries. PCOS could cause problems with the ovaries which includes infertility.

Rare cases of ovarian cysts are the malignant ones and are considered cancerous.

Ovarian Cysts Treatment

The doctors will have to recommend a treatment for cyst removal if the cyst didn’t disappear at a given time frame. The following are the possible treatments:

  1. Laparotomy is a treatment recommended for patients who have large cysts. The doctor will have to perform a large incision in the lower part of the abdomen to have the large cyst removed. A biopsy will have to be done also to further assess the condition of the cyst.
  2. Laparoscopy is a procedure done for small cysts. Just like Laparotomy, the doctor will have to perform a small incision but this time near the navel. He/she will have to insert a small instrument to have the cyst removed.
  3. Birth control pills are given for patients who happen to have recurring ovarian cysts. The oral contraceptives will be given to them to stop the ovulation. This will also stop the development of ovarian cysts.

Apart from the medical tests and treatments for ovarian cysts, there is also a number of ways to try in order to prevent those cysts from growing. The case is, ovarian cancer could also mimic ovarian cyst symptoms. This is why it will always be best to see a doctor whenever an individual is feeling a pinching sensation in the uterus.

There are also home treatments or ovarian cyst pain management that one can perform in order to suppress the pain. Let’s check out the list below.
